True Story: Daddo didn’t grow up with S’Mores – and he was **AWFUL** at making them when we started camping together. They were exceptionally messy, way too gooey, and not an actual “s’more”. He tried, though – so someone forgave him (not sure who, but someone must have).
Tips: Daddo learned that s’mores are easy and fun. Here’s how we do it:
Shopping list:
– Marshmallows (get the good ones – we tried the yellow bag ones and found that they lacked flavour, especially when toasted). Size doesn’t matter, but if you’ve never made a s’more before, go with the “normal” sized marshmallows.
– Chocolate! You can use almost any kind of chocolate here. We prefer something along the lines of a Dairy Milk bar, but also use Reese’s peanut butter cups, Hershey’s cookies and cream bars, and Costco chocolate pieces. Use your imagination and have fun!
– Graham Crackers – we normally have the Honeymaid Graham Wafers, and we’ve had success with other brands too.
– Roasting sticks – whether you buy these online, find them in-store, or whittle them yourself from branches, you will need sticks for toasting your marshmallows (because you can’t do that in your hand over the fire). Our sticks this year are telescopic and extend to 32″ long – which seems like far enough that we, as parents, feel safe with the kiddos near the fire.
– Fire! You need a good, controlled fire to get a proper toast on your marshmallows – too hot and everything burns, too cold and it’s just a marshmallow.
How you do it – Put a marshmallow on a stick and toast it until you’re happy. We’ve learned to be patient and take our time to get the perfect gooey marshmallow that isn’t burned (it takes some practice). Then layer a graham cracker, chocolate, and your marshmallow. If you want, close it up like a sandwich (like Kid 3 did here). Enjoy!
